What is Vitamin B12?
Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) is an essential water-soluble vitamin that supports DNA synthesis, red blood cell production, nervous system function, and energy metabolism. It is naturally found in animal products such as meat, fish, dairy, and eggs, and in some fortified plant-based foods.
Our Vitamin B12 Shot
A Vitamin B12 Shot is a concentrated dose of Vitamin B12, administered via injection. This treatment is designed to deliver Vitamin B12 directly into the muscle, enabling increased absorption through the muscle’s rich blood supply, quickly raising levels in the body, particularly for individuals suffering from Pernicious Anaemia, or those who struggle to absorb Vitamin D orally, through either diet or supplements, due to restrictive diet or ongoing medication.
One Session: £75.00
Course of 5 Sessions: £250.00 (£50.00 per session)
What is Vitamin B12 Deficiency?
Vitamin B12 deficiency can occur for various reasons, including restrictive diet, lack of absorption due to ongoing medication, or Pernicious Anaemia. A lack of Vitamin B12 in the body causes the production of abnormally large red blood cells which are unable to effectively carry out their vital function of carrying oxygen around the body using haemoglobin.
Restrictive Diet
Vitamin B12 is most commonly obtained through diet, however, it is found exclusively in foods of animal origin, so following a restrictive diet (e.g. vegan/plant based) which excludes these food groups, can cause Vitamin B12 deficiency if a sufficient amount of fortified products or supplements are not consumed.
Medication
Ongoing use of certain medications (e.g. acid-reducing medicines such as PPIs, H2RAs) can cause a lack of absorption of Vitamin B12 in the body, leading to a deficiency.
Pernicious Anaemia
Pernicious Anaemia is the most common cause of Vitamin B12 deficiency in the UK. It is a condition which can prevent absorption of Vitamin B12 in the body from food sources, due to the immune system attacking healthy cells in the stomach.
What are the symptoms of Vitamin B12 Deficiency?
Vitamin B12 is responsible for several vital bodily functions, such as maintaining a healthy nervous system. Therefore a lack of Vitamin B12 can cause various health complications, including:
Tiredness, fatigue and/or lack of energy | Sore and/or red tongue | Mouth ulcers | Muscle weakness | Vision problems | Psychological problems (depression, anxiety, confusion, dementia) | Problems with memory, understanding and/or judgement
If left untreated, a prolonged Vitamin B12 deficiency (both with or without anaemia) can lead to more serious health complications, including:
Problems with nervous system | Infertility | Heart conditions | Pregnancy complications and/or birth defects | Increased risk of developing heart failure
